Recent events have sparked a heated debate on social media with hashtags like 'Maldives vs India', 'Boycott Maldives', and 'Visit Lakshadweep' trending on Twitter. Many expected the Maldives to apologize for their actions, but instead, their President made 20 agreements with China during his visit. This includes promises of tourism and financial support through the Belt and Road Initiative. The Maldives is standing firm, calling India a bully and vowing to no longer rely on any single country. They are finding replacements for their dependency on India in areas such as education, food imports, and healthcare. In addition, direct flights between China and the Maldives are set to increase, with China promising double the number of tourists compared to pre-COVID times. This confidence has led the Maldives to issue a deadline for India to withdraw its soldiers from their territory before March 15th.
The Maldives, consisting of 1,190 islands, is a nation heavily dependent on tourism. However, its future is threatened by climate change, as rising sea levels could submerge 80% of the country within the next 25 years. Despite this, the Maldives embraced tourism as a means of economic development. Their "One Island One Resort" approach attracted foreign tourists and led to partnerships with other countries for investments in infrastructure and luxury resorts. However, the irony lies in the Maldives' criticism of foreign military presence while selling off parts of their land to other countries for economic gain. The tourism industry contributes 28% to the Maldives' GDP, with taxes from this sector accounting for 20% of the country's total revenue.
China's interest in the Maldives is not only driven by tourism but also by its strategic location for trade. By having a strong relationship with the Maldives, China ensures the security of its trade routes passing through the Indian Ocean. The Belt and Road Initiative further solidifies China's influence in the region. The Maldives, in turn, has welcomed Chinese investments and infrastructure projects. However, the cost of this partnership has put the Maldives in significant debt, similar to China's debt trap diplomacy with other countries. China's economic strength and surplus allow it to financially support small nations like the Maldives, further strengthening their influence.
Contrary to the Maldives' current stance, India has been a longstanding ally and supporter of the country. In times of political instability and natural disasters, India has provided assistance and aid to the Maldives. India has also invested in defense equipment purchases, infrastructure development, and defense cooperation. However, the Maldives seems to be turning its back on India and falling into China's influence, disregarding the historical support and assistance provided by India.
It is important for us to remember the actions of the Maldives and not forget their betrayal. While social media activism is significant, it is action and conscious decision-making that truly brings about change. The Maldives may temporarily benefit from their alliance with China, but in the long run, they will still rely on India and other countries for tourism. It is crucial for India to focus on self-reliance and compete with China economically. Only then can we truly address the challenges posed by the Maldives and other nations.
Remember, this blog aims to shed light on the current situation and encourage critical thinking. It is important to stay informed and make conscious decisions that support our own economy and national interests.
